With his work Jesse Strikwerda (1991) reflects on reality as a spectacle and how it is constructed, using quickly drawn gestures on paper and walls, characters as potential actors, and video. This reality may appear rigid and fixed, but he aims to make it fluid with his work. Theater plays a clear role in Jesse's practice. A stage allows for the isolation of an event. It breaks the event down into a backdrop, wings, and actors. In his view, these structures reflect society. What is being played out is not as important to him as how it is being set up, the rules that are applied, how the narrative is constructed, and the dynamics and hierarchies between players.
