On Equal Ground
2024
It's Not You, It's Me - Nieuw Dakota - Amsterdam
In collaboration with Goof Kloosterman
‘“On Equal Ground" is a representation of an abstracted elevation map, designed in grayscale using carpet tiles. By removing color and markings, the artwork can be interpreted in multiple ways, as both a mountain and a valley. It serves as a metaphor for the unequal perspectives with which Kloosterman and Strikwerda viewed each other within their relationship—being placed on a pedestal, feeling small, and the distance that can arise within a relationship.
The carpet has recently become a new platform where the former lovers engaged in dialogue to come closer again. The various drawings you can discover on the carpet visualize the conversations between the ex-lovers. A recurring motif in these images is clouds, symbolically referring to different aspects of a relationship, such as the dreamy feeling of "having your head in the clouds," the foggy atmosphere of misunderstanding, and the cartoon-like conflict cloud that illustrates disputes.‘
